GiveDirectly

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF PROXY MEANS TESTS AND CONSUMPTION SURVEYS FOR RURAL POVERTY ASSESSMENT IN LILONGWE OF MALAWI IN 2022 collected data for 15000 households in rural Lilongwe. The study was done in 18 traditional authorities with a total of 54 villages or clusters. The study employed probability proportional to size of the TA and cluster using the 2018 Malawi Population and Housing Census data. The GiveDirectly required household level data on poverty levels in Lilongwe Rural. These data was used to train a machine learning algorithm. In this assignment DSSCC collected: (a) consumption data from 2,000 households, randomly selected from across Lilongwe Rural. Consumption surveys are estimated to take 3-4 hours per respondent; (b) PMT data from 13,000 households, randomly selected from across Lilongwe Rural. Data collection took 20-30 minutes per respondent. DSSCC developed the questionnaires using the Malawi HIS survey tools using in HIS 2019-2020. Further DSSCC programmed the data collection questionnaires using SurveyCTO. The study was executed between December 2021 and 30 April 2022.

World Relief 2020 Project

The Strengthening Community Health Outcomes through Positive Engagement (SCOPE) Project is a multi-country project (Haiti, Kenya, Malawi, and South Sudan) that World Relief (WR) is implementing aiming to address key drivers of child and maternal morbidity and mortality at the community level to contribute to the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The project plans to target 1,373,446 beneficiaries with a focus on impacting women and children. Religious leaders, men, and community volunteers will be mobilized as key actors in this project. Therefore, before implementation, WR commissioned Data Science and Statstical Consulting Centre to do a baseline assessment in order to determine the reference point values to inform target- setting and intervention planning; provide direction for learning and adaptation; and serve as a threshold for evaluating project effectiveness. In Malawi, the SCOPE project is being implemented in selected 5 traditional authorities in Lilongwe and 4 traditional authorities in Machinga district. This assessment was done between 31 August 2020 to 19 September 2020.

Community-based approaches are critical to preventing and treating TB. Community-based Monitoring (CBM) is a data driven process of drawing in, activating, motivating, capacity building and allowing the community and its representatives to directly give feedback about functioning of public health services. The assessment is consistent with the Malawi Community Health Strategy objectives 2-6 due to focus on services available at community level, capacity of the monitoring of community work, and engagement of community structures

National TB Control 2020 Project

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a public health concern in low and middle income (LMIC) settings where more than 80% of the global TB burden resides [2] . Malawi has observed a declining trend in TB due to successful implementation of the antiretroviral therapy (ART) programme because the majority of TB cases were infected with HIV [3] . The implementation and scaling up of community-based TB activities remains weak, despite the clear need, the documented cost-effectiveness of community-based TB activities and the tremendous efforts that have been expended in recent years [4] . Lack of effective collaboration between National Tuberculosis Control Programmes (NTPs) and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs) and other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the absence of joint strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation are more the norm than the exception [4] .

TB Prevelence 2019

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are a key population in the tuberculosis (TB) programme in Malawi. Despite this, there is a dearth of TB research among the HCWs in Malawi hence we conducted this assessment to understand the burden of post-TB disabilities amongst the HCWs previously treated for TB between 2016 and 2020. The specific objectives of this assessment were to: (a) estimate the prevalence of TB amongst the HCWs, (b) estimate the burden of post TB complications as well as the various types of problems amongst the healthcare workers previously treated of TB disease in Malawi, (c) establish challenges associated with performance of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) of health care workers previously treated of TB disease in Malawi, and (d) establish the existing coping and support mechanisms at different levels for healthcare workers previously treated of TB disease in Malawi..
